  5. Erythropoietin (EPO) [1] is the mammalian  glycoprotein  hormone  involved  in
  6. the regulation   of  erythrocyte  differentiation and  the  maintenance  of  a
  7. physiological level of erythrocytes in the bloodstream.
  8.  
  9. The mature form of EPO  is a  glycoprotein  of 166 amino acid  residues.  As a
  10. signature pattern, we selected a perfectly  conserved  stretch  of 15 residues
  11. located at  the   N-terminal extremity  of mature EPO that includes a cysteine
  12. which has been shown, in Human EPO, to be implicated in a disulfide bond.
