- * Erythropoietin signature *
- ****************************
-
- Erythropoietin (EPO) [1] is the mammalian glycoprotein hormone involved in
- the regulation of erythrocyte differentiation and the maintenance of a
- physiological level of erythrocytes in the bloodstream.
-
- The mature form of EPO is a glycoprotein of 166 amino acid residues. As a
- signature pattern, we selected a perfectly conserved stretch of 15 residues
- located at the N-terminal extremity of mature EPO that includes a cysteine
- which has been shown, in Human EPO, to be implicated in a disulfide bond.
-
- -Consensus pattern: A-P-P-R-L-I-C-D-S-R-V-L-E-R-Y
- [C is involved in a disulfide bond]
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
- -Last update: October 1993 / First entry.
